Lighting Choices For The Modern Home

By: Michael Russell

Article Word Count: 566

There are many options available when choosing lighting for a new home. The type of lighting chosen is dependent on the person. Some people prefer their rooms to be darker or calmer while others prefer a brightly lit room. Natural light versus artificial lighting is also a consideration. Artificial light comes in a variety of colors and hues. The lighting receptacle can have an influence on the appearance of the light as well. Careful planning and consideration should be taken when choosing lighting, as the wrong choice can negatively impact the ambiance of the room.

If you are building a home, you will have more freedom to explore the natural lighting choices. Many newer homes are built with skylights in the living rooms, bedrooms, or bathrooms. This will allow the house to feel bright during the day and eliminate the need for daytime artificial lighting. The drawbacks to skylights are the fact that they can let in obnoxious sunlight at certain times of the day. It may be possible to add blinds to skylights to control the level of sunlight. The other drawback is that hail or a strong storm could damage the skylight causing a leak. Windows are another option to provide natural sunlight. All homes come with windows, but it is up to the builder to decide how many to install. Too many windows limit the wall space for hanging pictures and other items. It is important to choose the right kind of windows, as the wrong kind can make the home less energy efficient.

When picking light fixtures, there are millions of choices available. Newer homes may come with vaulted ceilings and ceiling fans. While this feature may be attractive, ceiling fans on a vaulted ceiling will be very high up. Light bulbs will be hard to change at that height, and if there is a problem with the fan, a professional may need to be called in. Wall lights may also be built into the wall with decorative sconces, however, many people prefer floor and table lamps. Lamps can have interesting or exotic decorative shades, which can enhance the visual appeal and theme of the room. Accent lighting can be used to enhance pictures or plants, but it will not help brighten the room very well. Track lighting hangs from the ceiling and can be aimed at certain spots in the room. Halogen lamps are very efficient at lighting an entire room. Halogen lamps can be dangerous as they get very hot and can start fires. Recessed lighting is built into the ceiling and appears flush with the ceiling.

Outdoor lighting is important as well. Patio lights and front door lights are common fixtures. Many people also choose to have motion sensor lights, which come on when a person walks in the path of the sensor. This is a security feature to deter burglars, as well as a convenience to the homeowner when walking towards a dark area of the home. If the house has a pool, pool lighting may be appropriate as well.

Choosing the right lighting is a huge undertaking. With the wrong lighting choice, a house may not feel like a home.
