Lighting – The Benefits Of Full Spectrum Lighting

By: Michael Russell

Article Word Count: 538

All homes, shops, and offices need to have a source of lighting. With the human race constantly working, and living, hours, which do not fit in with the hours of natural light and dark, it is crucially important to have adequate light. The vast majority of lighting systems in the workplaces and homes of today depend on either incandescent electric light bulbs, or on fluorescent tubular lighting. What many people do not realise is that these common forms of lighting can have a dramatic negative effect on people's health, and that there are much better alternatives.

Neither incandescent light bulbs nor fluorescent lighting give out the full range of light that is available from the natural light of the sun. Natural sunlight is vitally important to the human body. In fact, natural sunlight is a nutrient, which is absorbed into the body, just in the same way as a nutrient taken from food would be. Sunlight has many beneficial effects on the human body. One striking effect is that on the human blood pressure. Studies of blood pressure statistics show that peoples who live very far from the equator, in the northern continents, have far higher blood pressure than those who live in the tropical regions.

Another common belief is that lack of exposure to sunlight is a major factor in increased incidence of influenza. Influenza occurs with a far higher incidence in the winter than it does in the summer, especially in countries with a temperate climate. Sunlight, in moderation, also boosts energy levels, making people who live in countries where there is a high rate of clear skies, low rainfall, and few dull days, far more likely to be physically active, and in good cardiovascular condition. The metabolism is also aided by sunlight, and it has been suggested that sunlight may even have a significant effect on a person's intelligence levels.

The immune system is the most important factor in the human body remaining healthy, and being able to resist disease. Sunlight has been demonstrated to be a major positive contributor in maintaining a healthy and effective immune system. One of the significant reasons for the basic ill health of the modern population is the amount of time that is spent in an unnatural indoor environment. The good news is that this lack of sunshine can be to a large degree overcome by the correct use of a lighting system that creates the full range of light that the sun creates. This system of lighting is called full spectrum lighting, and it is now within the budget of not only the office and the workplace, but also the home.

That the full spectrum light bulb has been universally accepted into offices and workplaces worldwide is a matter of extreme controversy. The use of standard fluorescent light bulbs is especially contentious, as this kind of light has an extremely limited range of light. Few people today realise that fluorescent lighting was designed during World War Two as a temporary expedient, and was never meant to be used in the long term. The fact that full spectrum lighting is now so readily available, makes this even more damning on those in authority.
