By: Deborah Foucher Stuke

Article Word Count: 260

The kitchen is the preferred gathering space in most homes. It has become the showplace of the home, and now it is required to function for a wider variety of tasks than ever before. A well designed kitchen balances function and form and provides a sense of comfort and well being in the heart of the home.

Lighting a kitchen requires special consideration of space, function, form, texture, color and the people who use it. Recommendations for good kitchen lighting:

? Implement a layered lighting solution to avoid harsh shadows and provide adequate task, ambient, and accent lighting.

? Placement of lighting equipment is critical for comfortable and effective illumination of the various tasks and functions of this space.

? Select quality light fixtures and bulbs for performance and efficiency.

? Equip the kitchen with lighting controls to adjust light levels for various tasks and functions. Each layer of light should have its own control.

? Look at the new fluorescent technologies and styles which are energy efficient, quiet, dimmable and aesthetically pleasing.

? Consider hiring a lighting designer to help you develop a lighting solution that enhances your kitchens functionality and the overall atmosphere.

Lighting design is the art of illuminating a space by merging technology with style. The challenge of a lighting designer is to develop solutions that achieve the best balance of light to accomodate the activities of the people who use the space.
